This photo book accompanies the exhibition at the Haus der Graphischen Sammlung in Freiburg.

The exhibition “6 August 1870” at the Haus der Graphischen Sammlung in Freiburg presents a seventy-part photographic cycle by Marcel van Eeden that investigates the entanglements of nationalism, colonialism, and racism from the Franco-Prussian War to the present.

In this project, van Eeden takes as his starting point the story of Abdel Kader Ben Lahcen, a colonial soldier from North Africa who died in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War and whose remains entered the anatomical collection of Alexander Ecker at the University of Freiburg, where they remained unburied and never repatriated. Through black-and-white photography and quotations from historical documents, he traces this biography from battlefields in Alsace and Baden to contemporary sites in Tunisia and Algeria, making visible a history that had long been obscured in scientific collections. The exhibition is organized by the Museum für Neue Kunst in cooperation with the University of Freiburg’s provenance research on colonial scientific collections and is complemented by works from students at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, who respond to van Eeden’s series with their own artistic reflections.

Lorentz bevat acht steendrukken die Marcel van Eeden maakte bij het gelijknamige gedicht van zijn hand. De litho’s werden door hem op de steen getekend en door Gertjan Forrer gedrukt. De tekst werd met de hand gezet uit de Gill Sans en gedrukt op BFK Rives. Bas Lafleur bond 40 Arabisch genummerde exemplaren in een door Christianne Duchateau ontworpen halflinnen band. Daarnaast werden er 12 Romeins genummerde luxe exemplaren in halfleer gebonden. Deze exemplaren gaan vergezeld van een originele tekening en zijn gevat in een overslagdoos. Alle exemplaren werden op de pers genummerd en door de kunstenaar gesigneerd.Statenhofpers

Een nieuwe editie in de interviewreeks Hollandse Meesters in de 21e eeuw. In deze serie gaat initiatiefnemer Michiel van Nieuwkerk bij Nest met zijn Hollandse Meesters in gesprek over hun werk. Deze keer is kunstenaar Marcel van Eeden uitgenodigd.

Marcel van Eeden maakt beeldverhalen. Hij tekent naar aanleiding van bestaand beeld dat hij vindt in tijdschriften, kranten en boeken. Beelden uit verschillende bronnen en tijden (maar altijd uit de periode vóór zijn geboorte in 1965) combineert hij met een fictieve verhaallijn.

Marcel van Eeden is a Professor of Drawing and Painting at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art.

About VACP

This visiting artist talk is supported by the Department of Art’s Visiting Artists and Critics Program (VACP). VACP fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through dialogue. Artists of national significance working in all media are invited to the Department of Art to present public lectures and meet with graduate students in seminars and for individual critique. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to attend workshops and lectures.
