K. M. Wiegand is a fictional figure created by Dutch artist Marcel van Eeden, who constructed an extensive pseudo‑biography around this name in the form of hundreds of small black‑and‑white drawings. The project was shown prominently at the 4th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art in 2006 (“Of Mice and Men”), where it appeared as a kind of invented archive that imitates the form of historical research and museum documentation.

Through scenes that resemble film stills, crime novels and newspaper photos, the drawings follow Wiegand as an artist, spy and drifter, without ever fixing his identity. Van Eeden bases all images on photographic material produced before his own birth in 1965, which gives the series the character of a continuous return to a past he never experienced. A book published in connection with the Berlin Biennial, “Marcel van Eeden: K. M. Wiegand, Life and Work,” treats this material like a scholarly monograph and reinforces the deliberate confusion between fact and fiction.
